Tons river

A short trip from the holy Ganga to Tons river

Just a day’s drive from Rishikesh, up in the foothills of the Himalayas lays the laid back town Mori, right next to some excellent rapids of the Tons river. Surrounded by thick pine forests, small rivers with waterfalls and pools to refresh in, the area offers many opportunities for rafting, kayaking, hiking, sightseeing and mountain biking.

The ride from Rishikesh to Mori is a spectacle of diversity. Every valley has a different flora and fauna, a different landscape and almost a different culture itself. The glowing heat in Rishikesh is soon forgotten and a cool breeze on the bike will take you uphill, over breathtaking mountain roads, through beautiful valleys and spectacular sights ranging from big or small temples to waterfalls and incredible view points.

The valley around Mori is a remote area and has a culture unlike any other in the region. The villagers are believed to be descendants of the Pandavas and Kauravas from the epic Mahabharata and are very friendly and welcoming to foreigners. The main road going through the town has many small tea stalls, shops and rest houses, where you can enjoy a cup of chai after a day in the cold spring water.

The river tons is rising from the Bandarpunchh mountain range at 6315m. It is the biggest Yamuna tributary and is believed to have more water than the Yamuna itself. Tons river and surrounding rivers are considered to be one of the most challenging white-water rivers to run in India! The bigger rapids start from Class 3 and going up to 5 and 6, depending on the water levels. Rapids on the main rafting stretch like the "Tons Squeeze" and the "Major Surprise" can get your heart pumping. Also multiple day tours for rafting and for kayaking are easy to organize and can vary from two to five days on the river.
